Heather Mills Stiffs A Fellow Amputee
More reasons to hate old stumpy. Mucca promised to help a Russian woman who lost both of her legs in a train accident. She vowed to get all of the bills and have her fitted for new legs. The Russian woman hasn't heard from her since.
HEATHER Mills smiles for the camera as she promises £10,000 to provide new artificial legs for a young Russian mum tragically disabled in a train accident.
But now we can reveal that pledge was a sham... and callous Lady Mucca has given nothing to desperate Maria Rybkina.
Mucca, who has an artificial leg herself, tenderly told the star-struck 28-year-old: "I will help buy you legs like mine. I will help you walk again."
But once she had basked in the glow of the photo opportunity, she IGNORED pleas about the increasingly pitiful plight of Maria—who was being forced to BEG on the streets of Moscow.
Former porn model Mucca just made yet more empty promises—despite claiming in her recent divorce case that she needed £627,000 a year for "charitable work".
And Maria is only now able to walk again because of the determination and fund-raising of British couple Robin and Inna Barratt, who befriended her. Robin revealed: "Heather rang us and emailed us repeatedly with promises to pay for Maria's legs.
"But every single promise she made fell flat. In the end, she never did anything at all." Yet when Mucca met Maria in her Moscow flat four years ago it seemed a dream come true for the pretty Russian mum who lost both legs after falling from a train when she was five.
Mother to a young son, Anton, now nine, she pulled herself around on a battered skateboard. She survived by begging, which was how Robin and his wife first saw her on a visit to Russian-born Inna's family.
Robin, 46, said: "Her life was miserable yet she was always smiling and cheerful. We felt compelled to help her and decided the only way to get her off the streets was to enable her to walk."
Stunned
After trying to raise funds themselves the Norwich couple contacted Mucca's amputee charity—and were stunned to get a personal call back.
Robin recalled: "She said brightly, ‘Hello, this is Heather Mills-McCartney'. We spoke for a long time.
"Heather said she would personally get Maria some really good artificial legs, which would cost around £5,000, and cosmesis—the silicone cosmetic covering—which would be another £5,000.
"She promised she would also provide all the medical support needed to get her walking again. She told us that because her charity only helped victims of landmines, she would support Maria from her own personal finances."
Mucca, 40, then met Maria in Moscow, during a visit to Russia with Sir Paul, who was playing a concert in St Petersburg.Afterwards Mucca sent Robin an email saying: "I will pay for Maria's costs agreed in advance and paid directly to the clinic. Please email me the price." In another she said: "Email me costs individually and I'll get money to you."
But NO MONEY appeared and the Barratts have had not heard from her for two years. Instead they have raised £5,000 through local donations, including £2,000 of their own money, and by holding car boot sales.
They also persuaded a Russian company to provide free artificial legs for Maria—which have now been fitted. "Seeing her stand on her new legs for the first time was amazing and brought everyone, including the medical staff, to tears," said Robin.
"Today Maria is no longer begging on the streets. She has a flat, drives and works part time as a nanny—and has learned to dance. Our legs have transformed her life."
The Barratts are still raising funds for Maria—who will need further help in the future—but will not be turning to Mucca.
Robin said: "At first we thought she was a really sincere person. But all her big promises came to nothing. It was shocking behaviour."
